UAE National Day 2026: How to Turn Three Leave Days Into Nine

With the year entering its final months, UAE residents have one major public holiday period still to look forward to in 2026: National Day, officially known as Eid Al Etihad.

The announced public holidays fall on Wednesday, December 2, and Thursday, December 3, giving workers the opportunity to build an extended break around the two-day holiday.

But depending on whether the holiday dates are adjusted, residents could potentially turn the occasion into an even longer getaway.

The Nine-Day Holiday Opportunity

Under UAE public holiday rules, authorities have flexibility in determining when certain holidays are observed when an adjustment can help reduce disruption during the working week.

If the National Day holiday remains on December 2 and 3, employees could potentially create nine consecutive days away from work by using just three days of annual leave.

The potential schedule would look like this:

DateStatus
Saturday, November 28Weekend
Sunday, November 29Weekend
Monday, November 30Annual Leave – Day 1
Tuesday, December 1Annual Leave – Day 2
Wednesday, December 2National Day Public Holiday
Thursday, December 3Public Holiday
Friday, December 4Annual Leave – Day 3
Saturday, December 5Weekend
Sunday, December 6Weekend

That would give workers a nine-day break from Saturday, November 28, through Sunday, December 6, while using only three annual-leave days.

What If the Dates Are Shifted?

There is another potential scenario.

If the National Day holiday were instead observed on Thursday, December 3, and Friday, December 4, employees could use annual leave on Monday, November 30, Tuesday, December 1, and Wednesday, December 2.

Combined with the surrounding weekends and the two public holidays, that arrangement could also create a nine-day break.

This flexibility means employees may have an opportunity to maximise their annual leave depending on the final holiday arrangement.

A Valuable End-of-Year Break

For UAE residents planning holidays, travel or simply an extended period away from work, the National Day break could be one of the year’s most attractive opportunities for stretching annual leave.

By strategically placing three days of annual leave around the public holidays and weekends, employees could potentially gain six additional days away from work without using them as annual leave.

However, workers should check their employer’s leave policies and wait for any official changes to the holiday schedule before making firm travel arrangements.

For UAE residents, December could offer one final chance in 2026 to turn a few annual-leave days into a much longer holiday.
